Harmless Flirtation

With Aaron gone, I've struck up a small flirtation with veganism. I doubt I'll ever do the vegan thing. I really like yogurt and baked goods and milk. But I've started toying with the idea and trying out some recipes. I like the idea of knowing how to make delicious vegetables which you have to learn to do if you're vegan, cause hey, that's all you've got.

And that's the thing about vegan and vegetarian cooking - you can't cheat. The food has to be good because if it isn't good, it's really really bad. Other food, all you do is add some meat and you have your flavor even if it's cooked lousy. Yuck.

I was reading some vegan propaganda, and it made the point that humans are hard wired to eat constantly which gets us into trouble these days since we've got so much calorie rich food around us all the time. But if you can teach yourself to eat vegetables and fruit, you don't have to always fight your body. You can eat and eat and eat and no harm done. Sounds like a good deal to me.

So while the cats away, the mice will play, meaning Reuben and I are enjoying our curried lentils.

I've actually been really curious to know if you've given Reuban any meat. At our specialist appt a couple months ago the Dr told me that I should be giving A. meat already. (I'd been putting it off.) Of course we're meat eaters, but I was surprised the Dr. didn't even ask if we were planning to give it to him or not. Dr.'s can be bossy.

I get vegetarianism and even contemplated it but Veganism is beyond my realm. I love a good dairy product too.

We are totally hardwired to eat all day. Just this morning (it's only 10AM) I have eaten a few handfuls of caramel popcorn AND a brownie, all in addition to my breakfast. The problem was that the popcorn was sitting right next to the fruit bowl, and there was no way the fruit was going to win.

And funny you mentioned it, just the other day I was thinking that I needed to get your curried lentil recipe. I picked up some delicious looking red lentils at the store that are just begging for some curry.

I went to a raw foods class last spring, and it gave me hard-core respect. Imagine not even being able to cook your lentils.

Which lentils, by the way, are delicious.

I would like some recipes! With two of my in-laws vegetarians/leaning towards vegan it would be cool to have some dishes to share with them.
