Free Rice

Here is another addictive little way to waste time on the internet. Play the Free Rice Game. It's a very simple game. A word appears and you pick the correct definition out of a multiple choice of four. If you get the answer right you get a harder word and move up a level, if you miss the word you get an easier question and move down.

The best part is you can justify your mindless game playing because each word you get right provides 20 grains of rice to feed the hungry. So far 9,481,828,970 grains of rice have been donated. An Indiana computer programmer created the game when his son began to study for the SAT.

I accidently spent about two hours playing tonight with friends. We donated over 3,000 grains of rice and as a bonus I learned the word "pettifogger" which is a dishonest lawyer. I'm looking forward to employing that word in my daily speech. Aaron, Jared, Sarah H, Jess and I got to level 46. I can hover comfortably around 41. How well can you do?

This is a very addictive game. I came home last night after a hard shift at work and was too keyed up to fall asleep, so I played for awhile. I got to 43 but was most comfortable around 38-40. What often saved me was my medical vocabulary. Who donates the free rice?

Interesting I wonder if most children and parents have the same vocab level.

This is from Free Rice's Website. I was happy to see that Lego is one of the advertisers. I LOVE Legos.

Who pays for the donated rice?

The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice.
Who distributes the donated rice?

The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The World Food Program is the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. In addition to providing food, the World Food Program helps hungry people to become self-reliant so that they escape hunger for good. Wherever possible, the World Food Program buys food locally to support local farmers and the local economy. We encourage you to visit the United Nations World Food Program to learn more about their successful approach to ending hunger.
Will the rice I donate make a difference?

The rice you donate makes a huge difference to the person who receives it. According to the United Nations, about 25,000 people die each day from hunger or hunger-related causes, most of them children. To a mother or father watching a loved child die in their arms from hunger, the rice you donate is more precious than anything in the world.

I made it up to 47 and donated a whopping 1000 grains of rice. I wonder what the volume of one average grain of donated rice is...

Ok, while involved in a 20 minute phone conversation with my mother-in-law, I donated 2060 grains of rice and was between 38-41. That's fun- I took a lot of guesses, though!

I can stay in 42-45 most of the time. Never better than 47 yet, though - I always screw up around then.

everyone on your blog is way smarter than I am. I'm not even going to say what level I was on. Well, I only tried a handful of words so far, but I knew I wasn't going much further anyways. very cool website though.

I got to 40, but not for more than a few rounds, I spent most of my time around 37-38...
