Netflix

Aaron and I recently reactivated our Netflix account which we canceled a couple months ago. We canceled because I am terrible of thinking of movies to watch so I tend to fill the queue with very educational documentaries from the seventies that aren't super entertaining. But I can NEVER think of what I really should be putting in my queue so I could use some recommendations. In exchange I will try to recommend some movies I like or expect to like for your queue:
1. Blame it On Fidel - What do you do when you're nine and your parents become communist? I don't know if this is good, but it looks hilarious. It's in our queue.
2. About Schmidt - I LOVE this movie. It plays edited on TBS every so often which is how I first watched it (I was up at 3am finishing an art project) It might be my favorite movie ever.
3. The Never Ending Story - I can sing the whole eighties theme song the movie is so good. Aaron claims he's never seen it which is why it's in our queue. I will force him to experience my happy childhood's media. The Last Unicorn is next, then Dark Crystal.
4. Love and Death - If you have ever read anything written by a Russian you need to watch this movie. As a bonus watching this movie will allow you to convince everyone you have read War and Peace.
5. Annie Hall - Anxiety at its finest.
6. When Harry Met Sally - You don't really need to rent this movie because it plays on tv every night but if you haven't watched it yet, your missing out.
7. Watership Down - I really like to watch this movie for the music, done by Art Garfunkle.
8. Master and Commander - Swashbuckling Naturalists? Mmm, Mmm Good.
9. Stranger Than Fiction - Sweet and funny.
10. Lagaan - Indians and Impirial British face off in an epic cricket match. Thank you Bollywood.
11. Wallace and Grommit or Creature Comforts - Nick Park makes me laugh
12. Babe - I could watch this movie all day every day. It holds such eternal truths: "Christmas means Carnage!"
13. Sense and Sensibility - by MASTERPIECE THEATER not the Emma Thompson one. Curse Willoughby!
14. Bride and Prejudice - This is worth watching to see Sayid from Lost dance Bollywood style.

About Schmidt eh? I've been meaning to watch that movie ever since I bought it two years ago for two dollars but I haven't gotten around to it. None of my friends had seen it so no one could tell me if it was any good.

What tends to be a good way to use netflix is searching through friends ratings. Of course if you added me as a friend I use netflix mostly for tv shows. But then also I have rated so far 538 dvds and I would recommend most of the five star ones. I guess if I were to recommend stuff now I'd say go with more Woody Allen, and Coen Brothers. If you haven't seen Hot Fuzz yet you need to see that one.

If you want a recommend on tv shows, I just recently finished my top 50 favorite tv shows of all time. Yeah, I'm a loser I know, but here it is,

Aaron makes fun of my childhood from time to time. He says that my childhood access to normal culture was skewed because my grandma had to send us "our television" in monthly packages with a bunch of VHS taps full of Jeopardy, Utah Jazz, Saturday morning cartoons, Rescue 911, Square One, etc.

BUT, even I saw The Neverending Story.

Even more. I saw The Neverending Story II in spanish @ a drive-in in Caracas no-less. Beat that Aaron!

Hey, I'd love to be a Netflix friend and spy on what you're watching. First I'd recommend about 2/3 of the Younce Classics List.

After that (just a few of my favs):
Rocky
Strictly Ballroom
Chariots of Fire
Clue
Moonstruck
French Kiss
Say Anything
The Spanish Prisoner
12 Angry Men
Some Like it Hot
Charade
Good Will Hunting
The Shawshank Redemption
Of Mice and Men (1992)

Oh, and we saw War Games on TBS last night - Ed stayed up late to finish it after I went to bed because he got sucked into the 80's movie formula and had to see everything turn out OK.

I would have sworn that I watched The Neverending Story for the first time as a kid WITH AARON! It was on a Massanutten trip with the Driggs - are you sure he isn't just saying that to get you to rent it?

From what Katy says I would have remembered it if I'd seen it. Grandma and Grandpa took you to Massanutten without me? They left me at home? Now I'm jealous. Bet you got to pour water over the rocks in the sauna and everything.

Where's Massanutten?
I recommend:
Howl's Moving Castle
All Star Wars except 2 & 3
Lilies in the Field
Romeo and Juliet (1968)- Hilarious!
Charlotte's Web- might want a funny one after that one

I just watched Neverending Story with Eliza recently, and liked it more than I thought I would after so many years. Here are a few of my favorites that you might like & may not have seen:

Duck Soup: The greatest movie ever made!

Aguirre: the Wrath of God: A megalomaniac conquistador yells at monkeys.

Alice (1988): Surreal, hilarious, somewhat disturbing, always inventive...has a frog who breaks stuff with his gigantic tongue.

Chimes at Midnight: The best Shakespeare movie I've seen.

Wings of Desire: A beautiful movie about existential angels--also has a little girl at the beginning who looks exactly like 3-year-old Katy.

The General: Another of the funniest--Buster Keaton does impossible things.

La Belle et la Bete (1946): A beautiful, strange, haunting, poetic version of Beauty and the Beast.

The Red Shoes (1948): The visuals are absolutely stunning and the colors are out-of-this-world.

Babe: Pig in the City: Darker than the first; I actually like it more even though its one of the strangest movies I know.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed: Feature-length silhouette animation before Snow White; Lotte Reiniger's intricately crafted paper cutouts are heart-stoppingly gorgeous.

And the Ship Sails On: A quirky, nostalgic, poignant, and charming look at European (especially Italian) culture on the brink of the Great War.

Labyrinth of Darkness: Has a really cool full-length stylized stop-motion version of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Sadko: This wonderful fairy-tale movie will teach you that Communism is good and that octopus people LOVE to dance the troika!

How did he make it through the 80's without seeing Neverending Story?!!

I second Kristen's "Flight of the Navigator," it's also an 80's classic. Wasn't SJP in that with Fred?

I'm still betting that like 20 minutes in Aaron jumps up from the couch and yells HEY! I'VE SEEN THIS!

Try
End of the Spear
Everything is Illumintated
Noises Off
The Waitress
X-Men trilogy
Bourne trilogy
Ghostbusters

This is fun to read everyone's comments. I'm going to update my Netflix queue as well!

I remember loving Never Ending Story when I was a kid. (I was also a big fan or The Last Unicorn, Flight of the Navigator and of course The Boy Who Could Fly) In a fit of childhood nostalgia I insisted that Joe and I watch Never Ending Story. It is so bad! We didn’t even finish watching it. I don't now if it was the special effects or what, but the Luck Dragon that I once loved is now creepy. But it is a movie that you must see at least once, so you should still make Aaron watch it. Though you might want to spare your self.
