I've been working really hard to get the recommended amount of protein. One of my tactics has been to drink a glass or two of milk at every meal. One cup of milk is 8 grams of protein so you can see it adds up quickly. It's been working well but we keep running out of milk. We ran out again last night and I realized we had just finished off our fifth gallon of the week. So we're going through more than a gallon a day. I think it's time to buy a cow.

Katy, When I saw the title of this post, I assumed you had fallen off the vegetarian bandwagon. I thought you must have had a pretty hardcore change of heart to actually want to buy the cow. My second thought was that you were going to start saving animals from slaughter by actually purchasing them. That also seemed interesting. Milk didn't cross my mind. I love milk and for the last 5 years Jess has limited my intake because it costs money. The deal was that when I got a real job, I could drink as much milk as I want. So in a couple of weeks here, we might have our own "Time to Buy a Cow" post. If we do, you can assume at first reading that it is about milk and not about Beef or animal rights.
I would love to own a cow! Unlimited milk AND someone to keep the lawn trimmed. That's a win-win.
... AND fertilizer for your lawn and garden. You just have to build a small barn and buy it feed in the winter and make sure it gets up to 36 gallons of water a day and actually go out to milk it every 12 hours. It's a great idea, though. Milk, even here in Vermont, is expensive. We have lots of reasons why- it's constant fodder for the local paper.
Anyway, another great source of protein is cottage cheese, if you like it. I love it and was constantly craving cottage cheese and vine-ripe tomatoes with pepper as a snack. Yum!
No kidding, that's my family normally. I'm trying to keep us at 3 gallons/week, but 4-5 is what we use normally.
Katy, I am the exact same way. Meat has just been revolting since I got pregnant. I go through about a half gallon a day, sometimes more. Do you think we could get a discount if we bought 2 cows?
