White Powder

Thanks to the generosity of a few of our friends who recently moved, Aaron and I became the proud owners of six full bags of powdered sugar. The only thing I know what to use powdered sugar for is to make icing and I don't even like icing that much. Does anybody have a good recipe that uses a lot of powdered sugar? I've been in a candy making mood. Any ideas?

I'd been hoping you'd ask a question like this!

This
is one of my favorite responses from BYU's 100 Hour Board. My personal favorite there is Answer 2, Paragraph 7.

Potato Fondant:
by Jane Sharrock (in the book Who Wants Candy?)

2Tbs unseasoned mashed potatoes
few grains of salt
several drops of vanilla or other extract
1-2 drops food coloring (optional)
About 1.5 cups sifted powdered sugar

Mix the first three ingredients, then color. Gradually add the powdered sugar until it has the consistency of pie dough. Knead by hand until smooth.

Uses: roll out between waxed paper and cut with tiny cookie cutters. Can add nuts on top or use fondant as a filling between 2 pecan halves, etc. Can also add ground nuts, coconut, etc.

Her book has LOTS of yummy uses for powdered sugar.

You could try marshmallow fondant (it is icing though) but it uses a bag of powdered sugar with a bag of marshmallows, couple tablespoons of water, and some flavoring. And then you can sculpt it like playdoh and make an art piece! I used the recipe here: http://www.cakecentral.com/article47-How-to-Make-and-Decorate-with-Marshmallow-Fondant-MMF.html and Justin liked to eat it by itself! It tasted the best the day after making it (more marshmallowy) and by itself, not on the cake.

How about that Chex muddy stuff? It's chex, melted chocolate and then powdered sugar on top. Yum.
You can also go to allrecipes.com and do an ingredient search, I love finding recipes that way.

I make chocolate icing/frosting with it. It is divine and I hardly like chocolate. Here it is:

2 Tbsp. butter/margarine
1 oz. unsweetened chocolate (this is one square of Baker's choc.)
1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 Tbsp hot water

Melt the butter and chocolate on the stove over low heat, stirring constantly (I don't bother using a double boiler here). Remove from heat and stir in the powdered sugar. If it isn't sifted, there will be tiny lumps...I just live with them. Mix in the vanilla and hot water until the mixture is almost pourable. Until you add the water, you will think there is way too much powdered sugar, but don't be afraid, because it will be delicious. This is from a brownie recipe. If you want the rest, let me know. I have used this on chocolate cake and cupcakes. Yum. Good luck.
