It is Good Friday, one of the most beautiful days of the year. In honor of this day I like to reread The Student by Chekhov. You can listen to it here. I reflect on this story often when I take the sacrament.
It is kind of neat to think of the two contrasting scenes around the coal fires- the one before the crucifixion where Peter denies that he is associated with Christ, and the subsequent one on the shores of Galilee where he declares his love and commitment to feed his sheep. I see the second as Peter's chance to be redeemed in the Lord's and his own eyes. Something we can all take heart in.
