The Inconvenient Truth

The inconvenient truth is that I sweat, sometimes a lot, and I get BAD helmet hair, and I sound like a dying horse going up big hills, but I have started to ride my bike to work.
I've actually wanted to for a while. I live well within biking distance to my work place, I'm only 3.5 miles and a few big hills away. And those big hills are great fun to go down. Which makes me wonder, why don't more people bike to work?
You can fight fat, enjoy the beautiful outdoors, and some days you are even faster than the bumper to bumper car traffic. Plus, it's so cheap. A good car costs you a couple thousand bucks, a good bike, a couple hundred. And there's no need for gasoline so you can save that money too and reduce acid rain, smog and the US foreign oil dependency. All in a days ride...

PS Does anyone have any tips on reducing helmet hair? I thought I'd just shave my head but Aaron got that panicked look of horror on his face when I brought up that option.

That's awesome, Katy! My thing about biking to work is that I would smell really bad by the time I got there. Any suggestions on that? Plus I would have to bike on Old Ivy Road which makes me a little nervous... I should do a trial run sometime, though, like on a Saturday, just to see if I can do it. You have inspired me. Or maybe I'm just saying I'll try it b/c I'm in Texas right now...

I did a couple trial runs (mainly at night or on the weekend) before I started going to work and they really helped me get comfortable and know what "precautionary measures" I would need to take to not show up at work drenched and stinky. It really wasn't as bad as I expected.

Cool. I'm going to have to try it.

My advice to avoid helmet hair is...don't wear a helmet. I know, lame, but after riding a bike in the summer in Las Vegas, I say there is no cure for helmet head...although sometimes the elders would put paper in their helmet to avoid getting the lines in their hair from the straps. IT seemed to work...for boys

I think part of the helmet hair solution is getting a helmet with good ventilation so that it doesn't get all sweaty, I have read that other helpful solutions are to start using a no-tangles child shampoo and brush your hair at work. I would definitely recommend wearing a helmet though because I like you as a sister in law...
