So this weekend Aaron and I went to Walnut Creek which is about ten to fifteen minutes South of Charlottesville. We rented a canoe (5 bucks for a very liberal hour) from a couple dazed teenage lifegaurds. It was a good time. We found two beaver dams on the edge of the lake. And we were able to paddle up along side a grazing mother dear and her spotted fawn. We tried to go up a little creek but after a few CLOSE encounts with a couple dozen sticky spider webs and their large fanged occupants, we decided to stick to open water. I didn't bring my camera because I didn't want it to get wet but I believe this picture is close enough to any we would have taken, minus the dog.
After reading The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Miller (AWESOME READ) and having such a good time Saturday, Aaron and I think it would be fun to take a canoe trip in Maine next summer. Anybody else interested?

wow, that sounds SO fun! I didn't realize that you guys went canoeing! I thought you went for a hike- how fun! I love canoeing! One of my favorite canoeing memories was in the Congaree Swamp with Pres. Tuttle and Jennifer and seeing an alligator and then Jen freaking about it! it was pretty scarey, though! but still SO fun... I like Ishmael from the laudatory Moby Dick must say that, "Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can." or some sort of body of water. so refreshing!
Great quote from Moby Dick. I know a lot of people don't care much for it, but I think it's a great book.
I also want to be on the record as loving canoeing and Moby Dick. Moby Dick is the kind of artwork, like the Sistine Chapel frescos or Faust, that attempts to contain the entire universe. It would have been interesting if the book had taken place in a canoe instead of a ship...a very crowded canoe
I wonder if they give guided whale hunting tours anywhere. If they don't, they should.
Aaron, good to hear your Scouting experiences in Maine didn't scar you too badly if you're thinking about going again.
What Scouting experiences? I am definitely in, if Mom and Dad will let me!
