Favorite Artist

A lot of times when people find out I studied art in school they like to ask me who my favorite artists is. I find it to be an agonizingly difficult question. There are simply too many artist that are for me worthwhile in their own way. But that's a lame answer, especially for someone who was simply expecting to hear, Monet or Michelangelo. So my answer is that I love the Northern Renaissance. Hans Memling, Hans Holbein, Jan Van Eyck, Albretch Durer... the list goes on.

I love their neurotic attention to nature, their utter devotion to the appearance of reality. The depiction of which they breed with the most abstract concepts. It's fascinating and lovely and bizarre at once. They are the short stories of painting, often small, compact and with every element absolutely purposeful and pregnant with meaning. But the pictures are worth a thousand words and long blogs are boring, so here for your viewing pleasure is a tiny tip of the iceburg

I agree, that is a rough question. And no one knows who Lisbeth Zwerger is.

I know who she is, but I guess that's because I married an illustrator.

I feel the same way when I get asked who my favorite author is. Impossible to decide, and the answer changes frequently anyway. :) Thanks for sharing those, they are amazing and there are a few I hadn't seen before.

It was almost exactly three years ago that we were looking at the Nothern Renaissance stuff in the Louvre. It's so fun to go to museums with you. I learn and appreciate so much more because of you.

I love the last pic...one of my faves. You should check out the blog of one of Jamieson's friends. She studied art history at BYU and does art of the week on her blog. For the past few weeks she has done the Northern Renaissance. Some of your favorites are there. Here is her latest one: http://shaneandbecca.blogspot.com/2007/08/art-of-week-albrecht-durer.html
