Tonight I am going to the information meeting for the Virginia Master Naturalist Program. The VMNP is "a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities."
If you are accepted into the program, they provide a 40 hour basic training course to equip you to do things like lead nature walks, monitor nesting boxes, do wildlife mapping and water testing or clean up trails. That's my idea of a good time.
I really hope I can get involved but I've been told that the application program can be rigorous. I'm a little nervous. I have a good bit of scientific survey experience but I have to admit I haven't done anything too recently. Wish me luck or if you are interested come join me tonight at 7 PM at the Ivy Creek Nature Center. They'll have information on other environmental programs and service projects in the area.
For more information you can go here.

"...if you are accepted to the program..." and "...rigourous application..."
I find this rather amusing. Are they trying to limit the number of people who are Master Naturalists? Heaven forbid we have too many people giving guided nature walks or trying to care for our environment, right?
I guess there most be an overkill of people who are concerned abou nature and the planet. Global warming smobal warming. ;)
This sounds really cool! Good luck, I hope you get accepted.
You would be great at this. I still have the letter of recommendation from Tom Abrahamson if you need it...I look forward to getting out of school someday so I can do things like this.
